The Rescue That Maxi Built
Maxi’s Mates began with one dog, and a promise. When Jane Galliford spotted a stray near the A66 in 2012, she couldn’t turn away.
That dog was Maxi. And after a long search and a lot of help from the community (including Michelle Cooper and a Facebook campaign), Maxi was found and brought to safety. Her story became our mission.
From One Dog To Dozens
What began as a single rescue grew into a mission to help more local strays. Jane and Michelle supported Waterfall Kennels, raising awareness and encouraging adoptions.
When the kennels faced closure in 2015, the team made a big decision: they wouldn’t stop. Instead, they built their own rescue.
With charity status secured, a derelict stable at Carlin Howe Farm in Dunsdale was transformed, brick by brick, into a sanctuary. Maxi’s Mates officially opened its doors on 1st January 2016.

Who We Are Today
Today, we care for stray, abandoned, and surrendered dogs from Redcar & Cleveland and Hambleton.
We have 56 kennel spaces and a small but mighty team of staff and volunteers.
Some dogs find homes quickly. Others stay longer. And a few never leave, but that’s okay. We don’t give up on dogs, ever.

Maxi’s Legacy
Maxi found her home. Now we help others do the same. Whether it takes weeks or years, we’re here for them until the right person walks through our gates.
And if that day never comes, they’ll always have one thing: a home with us.
